# Freemasonry in Egypt: Egyptian Freemasons and Masonic Lodges

Freemasonry in Egypt belongs to a varied Mediterranean history of lodges, cultural exchange and symbolic traditions. Egyptian Freemasonry is best understood by distinguishing its documented historical organizations from the institutions working in the present.

## Egyptian Freemasonry: an overview

Egyptian Freemasonry developed within the wider networks of modern Freemasonry during the nineteenth century. Its history involved a variety of rites, jurisdictions, European residents and Egyptian social environments. It was not the activity of a single organization operating unchanged through every period.

Egyptian Freemasons participated in a complex world of urban associations and intellectual exchange. Historical evidence is necessary to identify individual lodges, dates and affiliations; a shared name alone does not prove continuous corporate succession.

## Masonic lodges in Cairo, Alexandria and Port Said

Historical accounts and contemporary Masonic publications identify lodges in Alexandria, Cairo and Port Said. These cities were important centers of Mediterranean commerce, scholarship, community life and international contact.

The history of Masonic lodges in Egypt must be distinguished from the current status of any organization. A lodge recorded in a nineteenth-century publication is evidence of historical activity, not proof that the same lodge remains active today.

## Ancient Egypt, Kemet and Masonic symbolism

Ancient Egyptian imagery influenced parts of Western esoteric culture and certain Masonic rites. Egyptian symbolism should not, however, be confused with documented organizational descent from the institutions of pharaonic Egypt.

The Grand Orient of Egypt draws a symbolic connection between Liberty, Equality and Fraternity and the ethical horizon of Kemet and Ma’at: the pursuit of truth, balance, justice and right relationships.

## The contemporary Grand Orient of Egypt

The Grand Orient of Egypt (GOE) describes its contemporary work as a lawful refoundation in 2026. Its founding statement identifies three initial lodges in formation and sets out commitments to freedom of conscience, equality between women and men, humanitarian action, knowledge development and civil responsibility.

The GOE presents itself as an active Masonic institution in Egypt. Claims about its institutional status should be understood as its published position rather than as independent proof about every other organization.

## How to learn about joining Freemasonry in Egypt

People searching for Egyptian Freemasons often want to understand whether membership is available and how legitimate contact can be established. The GOE states that it welcomes free women and men of good morals, respecting different religious, spiritual and metaphysical beliefs.

Those interested in the GOE should consult its official website, goe.fm, and contact info@goe.fm. Unofficial intermediaries, payment requests and claims of representation should be verified carefully.

## Documentary context and verification

### Contemporary evidence from 1870

The 11 June 1870 issue of The Freemason documents reported Masonic activity in Alexandria and Cairo, including the Pyramid lodge and the lodge named St. John’s. Its digitised OCR reads “St. John’s No. 199”; the archive of Bulwer Lodge of Cairo identifies St. John’s Lodge of Alexandria as No. 919.

The same newspaper transcription reads “Bulmer”, whereas the historical lodge records identify Bulwer Lodge of Cairo as No. 1068. This archival correction does not imply legal continuity with the contemporary GOE.

### Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said and the 1964 interruption

Samir Raafat's historical account, citing earlier Egyptian material, describes the Grecia and Bulwer lodges in Cairo and reports Masonic activity in Cairo, Alexandria and Port Said. It also reports the closure of the Masonic Temple on Toussoun Street in Alexandria on 4 April 1964.

### Ancient Egypt and Masonic symbolism

Ancient Egyptian imagery influenced Western esotericism and Egyptian-themed Masonic systems. Symbolic influence does not by itself prove direct organizational descent from pharaonic Egypt.

### The contemporary Grand Orient of Egypt

The GOE describes its contemporary institutional identity as a lawful refoundation established on 6 May 2026 and states that three initial lodges are in formation. These are institutional statements published by the Grand Orient of Egypt, distinct from claims about uninterrupted historical succession.
